Finding Beauty in the Everyday — My “Our Town” Enniscorthy Project
Over the summer and autumn of 2023, I set out on a personal photographic journey — one that took me through twelve early Sunday mornings wandering the streets of Enniscorthy, camera in hand. The goal was simple yet meaningful: to capture the quiet, everyday moments that shape the character and soul of this charming town, moments we often pass by without noticing.
Why Enniscorthy?
Enniscorthy is more than just my hometown — it’s a place layered with history, memories, and a resilient community spirit. Growing up here, I became familiar with its landmarks, but I wanted to look deeper. I wanted to explore the textures, light, and stories hidden in plain sight — the peeling paint on an old shopfront, the gentle ripple of the river, the play of shadows on cobblestones.

The Process
Each Sunday, I dedicated several hours to roaming different neighbourhoods, experimenting with different angles and lighting. Early mornings were ideal — the soft light, the quiet streets, and the slower pace gave me a chance to really see and feel the environment. I aimed for images that were honest and unpretentious, avoiding staged or overly polished shots.

The quiet atmosphere helped me connect with the scenes on a deeper level and capture the authentic spirit of the town. I wanted to document the small moments that reflect the everyday life and evolving identity of Enniscorthy.

The Exhibition
The culmination of this project was the solo exhibition Our Town – Enniscorthy, held at Enniscorthy Castle in late 2023. Selecting 60 images from over a thousand photographs was tough — each shot held its own story and emotional weight. The exhibition aimed to resonate with locals by highlighting familiar scenes while inviting visitors to see Enniscorthy through a fresh lens.

Seeing people recognize their neighbourhoods and share memories sparked by the images was incredibly fulfilling. It reinforced my belief that photography is not just about pretty pictures, but about connection — connecting people to places, moments, and each other.
What I Learned
This project reminded me of the power of slowing down. In a fast-moving world, taking time to observe and appreciate small details can change how we experience our surroundings. Photography became a form of meditation — a way to be present and curious.
I also discovered the importance of community in art. The support from friends, family, and local organizations made the exhibition possible and meaningful. It was a reminder that creativity thrives when shared.
What’s Next?
I’m excited to continue exploring Enniscorthy and beyond, experimenting with new techniques and stories. I plan to publish a photobook based on Our Town and hope to collaborate with local historians and writers to deepen the narrative.
